Name the Food Group Sandwich
Ms. Kara Sherfick, teacher at the North Madison Elementary School in Camby, Indiana has students build construction paper sandwiches to review concepts taught in Pyramid Cafe®. Afterwards, they complete a writing activity.

What You Need
• 2 bread, 1 tomato, ham, lettuce and cheese template per student.
• 5-inch paper plate per student
• Stapler, glue, scissors

What To Do
1. Download the "Name that Food Group Sandwich" blackline masters.

2. Reproduce copies on colored paper to correspond with each template, e.g. brown for bread, yellow for cheese, etc.

3. Distribute uncut sandwich pieces and a paper plate to each child.

4. Label each sandwich piece according to the correct food group.

5. Have students cut out sandwich pieces and build their sandwich.

6. When the sandwich is complete, staple at the top to keep the pieces together.

7. Attach sandwich to the paper plate by gluing the bottom piece of bread to the plate.

8. Complete one of the following:

   a. Pretend you are a chef at the Pyramid Cafe and describe how to make your sandwich and why customers should order it.

   b. Write an acrostic poem using the words nutrition, health or Pyramid Pals

"Many of the students, cut a small bite out of the sandwich so it looks like someone bit into it!"
- Kara Sherfick
