Eat the Five Food Group Way!®
Five Food Groups on Parade
Grade Level: 2nd Grade / Primary Elementary
Rating:
Synopsis:
Students put their art talents to work and create a Parade-of-Foods mural on
a window, mural paper or posters. This is a great activity to display at an open house.
Activity Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify foods within each food group to draw or paint
- Draw or paint foods to create a Five Food Group class art project
- Develop skills for working in small groups
Material and Advance Prep:
- Print and duplicate Eat the Five Food Group Way!® handout (PDF, 1 per student)
- Decide which art option to use - window painting, mural or posters
- For window option: tempera paints, brushes and dish soap. Add 1 or 2 drops of soap to each container of tempera.
- For mural or posters: mural paper or poster board, crayons, markers, or paint and brushes
- Write the name of each food group on the window, mural or posters
What to Do:
- Ask if anyone has ever been to a parade or watched one on television. Discuss
the concept of parades and reasons we have them. Ask students to think about and
explain what a Parade-of-Foods might look like.
- Tell students they are going to create a Parade-of-Foods. As a class, select
the parade style: animated foods marching, children carrying food, foods in wagons,
train cars, etc.
- Introduce or review the Five Food Groups using the Eat the Five Food Group Way!® handout.
- Divide students into 5 teams. Assign each team a different food group. Individually,
or with the help of teammates, have each student identify a food from their assigned group
that they would like to draw or paint. Have each group share with the class their food
group and the foods they want to draw or paint.
- Explain the logistics for working on the project. Give students time to complete their
window, mural or poster. Display murals or posters in the classroom, hallway or cafeteria.
