Pete Pizza Elected 2008 President of School Lunch

The votes are counted and the results are in! Pete Pizza emerged as the winner from a slate of five nutritious, active candidates on the Vote for School Lunch 2008 - Presidential Election ballot. Receiving 42.7% of the votes, Pete Pizza was the top slice in 46 of the 50 states, followed by runner-up, Biff Burger, winner of the 2007 primary.

"Thank you to everybody who elected me President of School Lunch," said Pete Pizza in his inaugural speech. "It sends a strong message that nutritious pizza made with whole-wheat crust and low-fat cheese is tops with students everywhere." He asked students to, "Help me keep my election pledge by eating healthy, balanced school lunches and being active!"

Like Pete Pizza, baseball player, all the candidates campaigned on their platform of sound nutrition, great taste and physical activity. The other four included:

  • Biff Burger - Lean meat and a whole-grain bun, football player
  • Larry Lasagna - Low-fat cheese, spinach and tomato sauce, street dancer
  • Gloria Grilled Cheese - Low-fat cheese and wheat bread, ice skater
  • Petunia Pita Pocket - Lean meat, fresh vegetables and whole-grain pita, soccer player

What is Vote for School Lunch?
In its third and final year, Vote was an award-winning celebration of the National School Lunch program. It carried all the elements of a highly successful "campaign" and provided the opportunity for students to vote in their very own election. Look forward to a similarly exciting campaign to celebrate National School Lunch Week in 2009.

In the meantime, get ready to celebrate National School Breakfast Week, March 2-6, with the soon-to-be launched Power Up with School Breakfast campaign from the School Nutrition Association and its supporters, including National Dairy Council®.

Coming Soon! Power Up with School Breakfast
Like Vote, Power Up with School Breakfast will provide endless opportunities to connect classroom and cafeteria learning, including a "Create a School Breakfast Superheroes" Contest and a Creative Writing Contest. Be sure to talk to your School Nutrition Director NOW about working together to teach students about making nutritious breakfast choices and powering up with school breakfast.
